Thank you for visiting the National Geographic Japan edition of the "Real Tabi" project page.
The magazine "National Geographic" is a quality magazine that is loved by 8.5 million people in 180 countries around the world. The "National Geographic Japan Version" is entitled "Real Tabi" project and introduces the traditional culture and entertainment rooted in the rich nature of various parts of Japan with Jeep.
In the October 2021 issue, we visited Amami Oshima on the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 4xe, the first plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) in Jeep history. Amami Oshima is an island located almost in the center of the mainland of Kagoshima prefecture and the mainland of Okinawa. This island is also called "Galapagos of the Orient", and the forest that occupies most of the island is inhabited by many animals and plants of the world's rare endemic species. It was registered as a World Natural Heritage Site along with Iriomote Island. The untouched nature reminiscent of ancient forests, such as the highly transparent blue sea, the 400-year-old banyan tree, and the mangrove forest, which is the second largest in Japan, healed our hearts.
The people I met on this island all said, "People living in Amami have always coexisted with nature in history." Amami Oshima's culture, such as Shima-uta, which incorporates the sea, forests, and animals into the lyrics, Oshima Tsumugi, which is characterized by deep black by mud dyeing that makes use of the iron content of native Teach trees and mud, and brown sugar that harvests and refines sugar cane that spreads all over. It was none other than the rich nature of Amami Oshima that supported this. We were able to catch a glimpse of how everyone is grateful for nature, awe, and trying to pass on a beautiful environment to the next generation.
The main means of transportation on Amami Oshima, which is not covered by railroads, is by car. For the people who live here and for the travelers who visit this island, life and tourism would not be possible without a car. However, carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from automobiles causes air pollution and contributes to global warming, which is a global issue. One of the solutions is next-generation vehicles that reduce CO2 emissions, such as electric vehicles (EVs) and PHVs. By improving the infrastructure required for these charging and shifting as many cars as possible from gasoline cars, we can reduce CO2 emissions and bring us one step closer to the realization of a low-carbon society. Currently, Amami Oshima does not have an EV charging station, which is a bottleneck for the spread of next-generation eco-friendly vehicles. Therefore, in our National Geographic Japan version "Real Tabi" project, we launched crowdfunding to create an EV charging stand in Amami Oshima. We believe that protecting the abundant nature such as the blue sea, deep forests, and rare animals and plants will lead to environmental conservation not only for Amami Oshima but for the entire planet. Crowdfunding activity reports will be posted on the Japanese version of National Geographic and its website.
I wish for a future in which people and nature coexist forever ...
We look forward to your support for this project and your support to protect Amami Oshima, which has been registered as a World Natural Heritage Site, and the future of the earth.
