As the display of the iPad Pro, the new 12.9in version just uses a display with mini LED backlight. But there may be the next big move soon.
There are rumors that there will also be iPad Air and iPad Pro with organic EL displays in the near future. According to South Korean industry information magazine The Elec, Apple plans to launch its first organic EL version of iPad in 2022. It has a screen size of 10.86in, and now the iPad Air (fourth generation) is exactly the same size, so it is likely to be the fifth generation Air.
It is reported that the 11-inch and 12.9-inch organic EL iPad will also be available in 2023. According to the screen size, we can infer that it refers to the iPad Pro model.
In addition, the magazine said that the 10.86in iPad (Air) will be rigid, that is, hard organic EL panels with glass substrates, while 11in and 12.9in (Pro) will be flexible, even soft organic EL panels with plastic substrates.
Flexible organic EL is a technology that bends the display internally, thinning the border around the screen. In fact, Apple has made Narobeselization by using this technology on the iPhone since 2017, when iPhone X. It is surprising that there will be a transition to organic LED soon after the introduction of mini-LED display technology in the new 12.9in EL.
On the other hand, Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known analyst, also predicted that iPad Air would be updated to organic EL, and South Korean supply chain information magazine ETNews also reported that "some" iPad models would use organic EL screens.
Organic EL is made up of 1 pixel of self-luminous elements, in contrast, mini LED displays emit light in local polarizing areas (backlights divided into multiple areas). At the current level of technology, the halo effect (color oozing that looks bright when the surroundings are also dragged) is inevitable. On the other hand, mini-LED has the advantage that the maximum brightness is higher than that of organic EL. However, if the perspective is changed to the supply chain, the mini LED display is expected to be widely adopted by the next MacBook Pro and future Apple products, just to eliminate the dependence of most organic EL panels on Samsung. It is also a strange development to increase the adoption of organic EL devices in the future. The status quo of the mini LED display has technical limitations, and Apple may also think it risky to switch the iPad Pro panel completely. That said, it's interesting how Apple differentiates its promotion when the same iPad Pro brand is a mix of mini LED and organic EL models. Source:The Elec
